I watched LBC’s World Bellydance Championship last Thursday after calling a number of people to remind them to watch it too. I’m a serious fan of bellydancing and so it was natural that I will be interested in seeing what the show has to offer. After all, with the primitive internet speed I have, YouTube bellydance videos tend to suck the life out of me.
I think Thursday was the first episode of the show, which featured six bellydancers from different countries. There was even a Russian and Ukrainian present and they did exceptionally well. However, I have a few comments on the reception of the show in the media and by the public, and not entirely about the dancers’ performances.
Here’s a theory I have been developing lately in response to the blatant phobia Arab people have of the monster otherwise known as the female body: A great number of Arab people indulge in the almost sadistic illusion of projecting all the centuries-long faults of society, religion, and human error on women.
In our Arab societies, women’s sexuality and in simpler terms their bodies are treated as either treasured possessions of men or perpetrators of corruption and amorality. A unique attitude prevalent in Arab societies is medieval in the sense that it perceives, and treats, them as inferior humans personifying a forbidden desire. The idea is that women must be brought to submission lest they sabotage the otherwise-perfect texture of society through their diabolic allure. The same attitude maintains, without shame or sense of contradiction, that women’s sexuality should be unleashed without restriction according to the whims and fancies of men within the context of unequal relationships. People have this attitude because it is relatively simple, it has a popular support base from men and women alike, and some societies/religions authorize it.
In addition to that, it is obvious that when a certain group is in power (politicians, religious leaders, media people), it is in its best interest to keep other groups at the bottom of the food chain. This comes to play when we realize that the vast majority of people in power in the Arab region, and I am tempted to say all but I will resist it, are men.
Putting all these arguments together, there is no wonder many people object to LBC’s decision to air this show. Obviously, the women will be quasi-naked (although some should not be allowed to expose their figures so), and they will most likely look attractive as they dance to Um Kolthom, and by extension will spread corruption and up the level of STD-infested horniness in the Arab world. I find the naiveté of the position remarkable and only matched by the amount of success these dancers will enjoy because of the show.
I read many articles criticizing the show, and others fiercely resenting it on religious and political grounds; arguing that we should concentrate on serious issues in the region instead of the sexy abdomens of some women. That is a shallow argument of course because there is plenty of seriousness in our media and an alternative must be present as well.
It is not rocket science: people who don’t like seeing pretty women dancing (or enough boobs to last one a lifetime and then some) should change the channel. They should also refrain from dancing in private parties and should abandon a key element in Arabic culture: bellydancing. I know some people who are like that, and they are miserable wretches who get married in lifeless weddings.
Bellydancing is a significant part of our heritage. It was just about the only positive stereotype the world had of us before 9/11; when Arab was synonymous with filthy-rich and clueless middle-aged man in a hatta. Let’s not denounce it merely because it is a feminine art.
<p>Arabs view belly dancers as the west views strippers, a <span style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA">piece </span>of meat. </p>
<p>Maybe it’s because they dance in sleazy nightclubs in the <place w:st="on">Middle East</place> and some of them perform sexual favors to the clients, this is the reality of it and that’s why it has a bad name.
<p></p></p>
<p>Maybe belly dancers should make an effort to organize artistic belly dancing shows in cultural centers to remove the sleazy stereotype :) . </p>
<p><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I like to watch belly dancing, it’s so popular here in <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Canada</place></country-region> and there are belly dancing classes everywhere.
<p></p></p>
<p></p>
I think this is why Egyptian actresses are reluctant to put on a belly dancing suit in a movie. Eventhough the same actress would hapily wear something more revealing. Somehow the suit and act themselves got a bad reputation.<br /><br />Having said that I don’t really enjoy weddings, belly dancing or not !<br />
My name is 3awwad. I am a typical Jordanian citizen. I work from 8:00
AM to 2:00 PM and my salary does not exceed JD 250. You can call me
“Monsieur Tout le monde” if you like. Excuse my low intelligence
quotient, buti think belly dancing violates the very essence of Islam. I think if you want to watch belly dancing, it’s ok, but you have to burn your veil. You are veild i think. <br /><br /><br />
<p>Interesting post, but I must say your view of arab belly dancing is on the romantic side. It’s great that you can appreciate it aesthetically, I do as well, in fact I’m looking into signing up for local belly dancing classes-I think it would really fun.</p>
<p>The mainstraim view of bellydancers in the arab world and in the west is anything but ‘femine art’, it’s alot like what 7aki said-stripper-like and slutty and alot of this is the fault of arab belly dancers (I’m just calling it exactly like I see it). I don’t see why you thought bellydancing was a positive arab stereotype. </p>
<p>There are different types of venues and places to go to see a belly dancer and in most places the scene is usually one where the spectators are mostly oogly-eyed tipsy males (+ some girlfriends) with something other than art appreciation on their mind and the main interest of the dancer is to bring in the cash and some of them will really do anything for it. Plus, they like the attention. I personally knew an arab girl here who dances (or danced) at such a place.</p>
<p>I’ve been to a couple belly-dancing shows where it was more about aesthetics, I enjoy those and the environment is completely different from the one described above; there’s alot more variety and creativity in the types of dancing and music and the audience is quite diverse. Many of the dancers don’t get money, it’s more like their side passion or hobby they’re into……and you know what, atleast the shows that I’ve been to, the dancers were NEVER arab! The music is middle eastern and many of them have arab sounding stage names but the dancers aren’t of arab heritage. Also, the audience usually isn’t very arab because from what I’ve seen the arabs prefer the type of venue I described above. </p>
<p>The last such show I went to was pretty fun, I went with a group of my grad school colleagues, the 2 belly dancers were local girls (I talked to them afterwards) and you can literally count the arabs in the room on your fingers.</p>
<p>The point I’m making is I don’t think belly dancing and belly dancers are being denounced because it’s "feminine art", if it is denounced it’s probably because of the way it’s practiced.</p>
Great post Tololy!<br />I do agree with 7aki that belly dancing has sort of been tarnished by misrepresentations of it, but it’s still an awesome post with a very interesting perspective. It’s always great to hear such opinions.<br />
No more Star Academy?
<p>Hey 3awwad, you’re preaching to the converted. And I don’t see how your salary is relevant to the point you were trying to make.</p>
<p>Thanks for the comments everyone. You made excellent points and here’s what I think:</p>
<p>It is true that a great number of bellydancers give the art a bad name, what with dancing in Egyptian slums with fat wiggly bellies and tarty tasteless costumes with hordes of drunk macho men rubbing against them. We’ve all seen this in movies, especially contemporary Egyptian productions. </p>
<p>But in old black and white Egyptian movies, dancing was more refined. None of that disgusting behavior was staged and perhaps the lack of this refined image of bellydancing is what drove people to disrespect it and call every dancer a stripper. </p>
<p>It just isn’t fair to dismiss this show (the topic of the post) because it’s a dancing show with lots of women in it. The dancers do nothing outrageous, the panel of judges is serious, and all in all the production is not tacky. I think people still hang on to their negative perception of bellydancers even when they clearly see LBC’s show is not like Egyptian movies.</p>
<p>So like some movies damaged the image of bellydancing as a sensual art and replaced it with vulgar whores dancing in slums, the chance should be given to this show to restore it.This is why I think people should lighten up a little.</p>
<p></p>
I think that the view to the women is not different between east and west to that extent. Who said that in west they do not see the body of a women as a delicious kind of meat. Man is a man and a women is a women and the desires are the same in east and west. My opinion is that such a show is extraordinary more than any show ever. It is a show to drop another stone from the wall of honor and ethics in our arab and muslim world.
So you claim people are too judgemental of women, yet in your post plus comments your statements concerning women include:<br /><br />"…although some should not be allowed to expose their figures so"<br /><br /><span class="commentBody"><span id="comment-23761">"bellydancers give the art a
bad name… with fat wiggly bellies"<br /><br />Finally, you dimiss bellydancers who are not sufficiently artful for your tastes as "vulgar whores". Whore is a disgusting, misogynist insult to be used against a women. Firstly, do you know she is a prostitute before making such an accusation and secondly, if she is working as a prostitute, would you not feel that she is worthy of help and support, rather then disdain?<br /><br />If those are not disrespectful, judgemental statemments then I don’t know what are. These remarks would be bad enough from a man, but to come from a women, makes them even more disgraceful.<br /><br />Further to your post, I do not believe that Islam forbids sensuality, instead it merely requires it to be a private matter, between a husband and wife.<br /><br />As someone who lives in a country where the opposite of this occurs on a daily basis, I can tell you that the Islamic attitude has many benefits (which is why there are so many western converts to Islam), both on a societal and personal level, but sadly you won’t realise that until it’s too late.<br /><br /><br /></span></span>
<p style="text-align: left; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: embed;" dir="ltr" class="MsoNormal">Safiya, <br /><br />
What you did is called shoving words into someone’s mouth. It is a low, cheap
attempt at misquoting me. I can’t be happier that everything I said has been
recorded into written words in a public venue so people can see the grave
errors you made. I am offended by your attack.<br /><br />
You took my words out of context and threw accusations my way right left and
center, when <b>ironically</b> you were trying to prove I was being judgmental
of women. <br /><br />
Here we go:<br /><br />
1- "<span class="commentbody"><span id="comment-23999">although some should
not be allowed to expose their figures so" : I find some people less
attractive than other people, men and women. I am sure you do too.</span><br /><br /><span class="commentbody">2- </span><span id="comment-23999"><span id="comment-23761">"bellydancers give the art a bad name… with fat wiggly
bellies": I’m amazed at your audacity misquoting me like that! This is
what I said, and I am pasting it here because I am sure you will not scroll up
and read it for yourself since you did not do so in the first place: </span><br /><span class="commentbody">"</span></span><span id="comment-23761"><b>It is
true that a great number of bellydancers give the art a bad name</b>."</span><br /><br /><span class="commentbody">3- I did not "</span><span id="comment-23999"><span id="comment-23761">dismiss bellydancers who are not sufficiently artful"
as "vulgar whores". This is what I said: </span></span><span id="comment-23761">"<b>So like some movies damaged the image of bellydancing
as a sensual art and replaced it with vulgar whores dancing in slums</b>…"</span><br /><br /><span class="commentbody">You see Safiya, I was talking about the <b>image</b>
portrayed of bellydancers in some Egyptian movies. Do make sure to absorb what
someone says before attacking them, yeah?</span><br /><br /><span class="commentbody">Really, your attack was entirely uncalled-for. To quote
you, "</span><span id="comment-23999"><span id="comment-23761">If those are
not disrespectful, judgemental statemments then I don’t know what are </span></span></span><span class="commentbody"><span id="comment-23999"><span id="comment-23761"> [<span style="font-style: italic;">sic</span>] </span></span></span><span class="commentbody"><span id="comment-23999"><span id="comment-23761">." </span><br /></span></span><span id="comment-23761"><!–[endif]–></span><span style=""><o:p _moz-userdefined="" /></span></p>
You’ve missed the point entirely. What I found ironic about your post was that you complain about judgemental behaviour and then exhibit such body facism.<br /><br />Finding somone unattractive is one thing, but to state they shouldn’t be allowed to show themselves or certain parts of their body in public is another matter entirely. Re: the comment concerning "fat, wriggly bellies", So does this mean that skinny bellydancers are ok, but if you deem someone to fall short of your standard of an ideal figure, then they demean the art?<br /><br />Is this not what you actually said? Can you not see the contradictions in what you have written?<br /><br />You claim that the Arab world is rife an obssesive desire to label and criticise the female form, but it seems you suffer from a similar malady.<br />
<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman";">I have not "missed the point
entirely," you have missed the core points in my post and chose to
argue about one sentence expressing a physical preference of mine, not to
mention that in this recent comment of yours you have proved to be unable to
respond to the clear rebuttals I made previously of your baseless accusations.<br /><br />
What ever happened to your alleged "pinning me down" on calling every
dancer a whore or saying that dancers give the art a bad name. Mmm, I know, you
were wrong. Anyway, I will consider your lack of response an acknowledgment of
your errors — not so much of a fascist now am I?<br /><br />
Nowhere on this page did I even hint that what you termed "someone who
falls short" of "my standard of an ideal figure" "demeans
the art." Where did you get that from? I know, your own misinterpretation!
<br /><br />
Perhaps in saying "some should not be allowed to expose their figures
so" I was harsh, but the intention was to be casual and funny. Saying some
were unattractive is not entirely true. Some people find the dancers I talked
about extremely attractive, but that’s their business. If apples are not my
type, I wouldn’t want to eat apples and this runs by the same logic. However,
the dancing was so marvelous I could not change the channel.<br /><br />
I hope that the other people who read my post have seen the essential points I
tried to make. It’s a shame you couldn’t, but that’s life. I will not dwell on
this trivial yet prolonged discussion of a joke.<br style="" /><!–[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]–><br style="" /><!–[endif]–></span><span id="comment-24207" />
<p>Tololy, that is a daring post that I applaud you for.</p>
<p>It is ironic how belly dancing endured the test of time and kept its strength as a prominent part of our culture. </p>
<p>And it is more ironic how it is one of the few things that western people cherish in our culture! </p>
<p>Good post!</p>
<p></p>
<p></p>
So, here I was thinking of making a joke to break the tension or something, somwhere in the context of "Cat fight". I’ve been watching a lot of "Scrubs" lately, if there are any fans, they’d see where I’m coming from.<br /><br />Maybe I didn’t start with a joke to try and sound as sophisticated as you, or maybe it was because for so long I’ve almost promised myself not to post any comments on your blog, even though I’m a regular visitor, and I like it. You post some very interesting issues, and I like your style. And even though I’m not into blogging, yours is the only blog I visit, regurarly<br /><br />Anyway, my comment, even though it’s not particularly related to the topic at hand, is this: You don’t take critisim well, all hell breaks loose when someone disagrees with you. Even if you don’t show it much, like what already happened in here.<br /><br />I’m not sure if you’d know who I am, but I left a clue in there, so at least you’d know it’s an opinion based on personal experiance, not just a random *attack*<br /><br />Take care and have a good one.<br />
Actually, I still feel uneasy at the use of the phrase ‘vulgar whores’, I think it’s a loaded term best avoided, but I will ascribe that to differing sensibilities.<br /><br />As someone who has worked with teenagers suffering from eating disorders and various manifestations of low self esteem, I feel very strongly about society’s preoccupation with the ideal female form. In fact, I categorise this obsession as a seeping sickness, as people absorb these ideals without even realising it and it infects their thoughts and actions.<br /><br />So in summation, I didn’t ‘get’ your joke, I didn’t find it funny, but perhaps now, you can understand why.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />
Thanks for the comments Safiya, I now understand where you’re coming from. I hope the little debate we had here was helpful in explaining where I stand. This was good!

God bless Mr. Asmar for this interesting program and the nice dancing we saw.I was also happy to prove that the Christian Lebanese are world citizens, not retarded beduins entrenched in their obsolete ways.3 out of the 4 finalists were Christians (Estelle, Rana, Layla)Apart from the Director and Ms. Nadra Assaf.Christian organizers and a Christian maronite winner.God bless Lebanon and the MaroniteThe cherry on top of this disgusting and terrorist middle east
<p>برنامج له هدف بس انتم عرب ما تفهموا </p>

I’m really sorry for you Mr. Simon Asmar. This show was really one of your biggest messssss. Was that world Belly dance championship or Lebanese belly dance championship? I love Lebanese, they are really good and nice people but Mr Asmar, please stop with your antagonist act against the other Arab nations and the rest of the world. When you call this program with title of World Belly dance championship at least engage 15 or 20 counties not 5 or 6 from the same country. I’m sure that we have many counties around Lebanon that belly dance are very common but they were missing in your program. we have Jourdan, Turkey and of course a lot of good dancers from Egypt. To bring some navies poor girl and shoot them to all world that who bad she dance is a shame and this is really shame for you Mr Simon Asmar. Depicting, even here in this simple show, your racism against that girl because of their nationality were really obvious. I liked many of your program in the past, you are a talented producer but I think you should let your son take over. It’s time for pension Simon.
